What is a freight forwarder?
A freight forwarder is an agent who acts on behalf of a client to ship goods internationally. A freight forwarder is not a carrier, but instead handles all the logistics involved in getting products and raw materials from one point to another. Freight forwarders work out the most economical and timely routes on available carriers and can provide additional services such as packing, loading and unloading, and warehousing.
Is it more expensive to use a freight forwarder than to ship goods myself?
Surprisingly, it is usually cheaper to use a freight forwarder than to DIY. Freight forwarders keep on top of industry trends and changes in ways the average business person cannot. This means a good freight forwarder has access to cheaper rates than you do. Furthermore, shipping is extremely complex and a simple mistake can result in huge delays and unexpected costs. It isn’t worth the risk.
How fast can I ship something to a destination?
If you ship by air freight, we can usually get it there the next day or even the same day. On the other hand, transit times from New York to Vancouver by truck are 4 to 7 days. Ocean transit times vary depending on the route, but exports between Spain and Brazil take from 15 to 30 days. If you want to get a better idea of transit times, give us a call and tell us what you are shipping, your point of origin and your destination.
Where can I have cargo dropped off?
You can drop cargo off at a warehouse or at the ocean vessel. In fact, we can even arrange cargo pickup at your warehouses. As a freight forwarder, we figure out the best way to manage your shipment end-to-end.
What paperwork do I need to fill out?
We will send you the paperwork you need to fill out for your specific shipment. We will also take care of all import-export documentation, including paperwork needed for customs clearance and to pick up cargo.
How do I pay for my freight shipment?
Payment can be made with a company check or wire transfer. We can also extend payment terms to creditworthy shippers with whom we have a strong relationship. Payment is usually due when the freight has been delivered and is about to clear customs and be released.
Why don’t you have an online shipping rate calculator?
Simple: online calculators are not accurate. It takes negotiating with carriers about rates to get the best prices on a specific shipment. Online calculators are like buying a hotel room at the full retail rate.
